79 SERIES LAND CRUISER EXHAUST SYSTEMS
WHY UPGRADE YOUR 79 SERIES EXHAUST SYSTEM
The search for a 79 Series exhaust system usually starts in the same place: a factory system built to a noise standard, not a performance one. Restrictive piping and undersized muffler internals push exhaust gas temperatures higher than they need to be under load. A quality aftermarket 79 Series Land Cruiser exhaust system opens things up with larger bore piping, free-flowing mandrel bends and less restrictive mufflers. The V8 or 2.8L responds with sharper throttle response, lower EGTs and a deeper, purposeful note. The difference is most noticeable when towing or working the engine up long climbs.
TURBO-BACK AND CAT-BACK EXHAUST SYSTEMS
The range is built from 409-grade stainless steel, the standard for performance exhausts in Australia because it survives the outback dust and coastal humidity that eat mild steel in a season or two. A turbo-back exhaust system replaces the full path from the turbo flange back and delivers the biggest gains on pre-DPF V8s. Cat-back systems replace everything behind the catalytic converter, a simpler install and a good middle ground. Dump pipes, engine pipes and DPF adaptor kits round out the catalogue, and most systems bolt on using factory hangers and OEM-spec gaskets.
DPF-BACK EXHAUST SYSTEMS
From 11/2016 the VDJ79 V8 runs a diesel particulate filter, and the GDJ79 2.8L facelift does too. A DPF-back exhaust system replaces everything behind the filter and leaves the DPF in place, which is what keeps the vehicle road legal. It is the simplest install in the range and still delivers most of the flow and note you are after. DPF-back systems are stocked in 3 inch, twin 3 inch, 4 inch and twin 4 inch, including a version routed around the auxiliary fuel tank.
4 INCH EXHAUST SYSTEMS
Four inch is the largest bore in the range and the choice for heavily loaded touring and towing rigs. Both turbo-back and DPF-back 4 inch exhaust systems are available for the single cab and dual cab, along with twin 4 inch layouts with and without a resonator if you want the volume without the drone. Smaller bores are stocked as well: 3 inch and twin 3 inch for most V8s, and 2.5 inch for the earlier 1HZ.
PRE-2016 V8, DPF ERA AND 2.8L FACELIFT FITMENT
Fitment splits by era. The pre-DPF VDJ79 V8 (2007 to 2016) has the widest choice, including 3 inch and twin 3 inch turbo-back systems. The DPF-era V8 (2016 to 2023) needs a DPF-back or DPF-compatible system to stay road legal. The GDJ79 2.8L facelift (2024 onward) runs its own DPF-compatible bore, and the earlier HZJ79 1HZ uses a 2.5 inch system. Single cab and dual cab body styles use different rear sections, so each listing confirms engine code, year, cab style and diameter. Most systems carry up to ten-year warranties and are built for loaded Australian touring and towing.
